Our Story

MOUNT HOPE PLANTATION HOUSE
NATIONAL HISTORIC LANDMARK CIRCA 1790

Majestic Oaks draped with Spanish moss surround the beautiful Mount Hope Plantation House. Mount Hope, one of the two surviving antebellum homes in the Baton Rouge area, exudes true southern grace and charm. Mount Hope Plantation is a privately owned estate. Mount Hope Plantation House is an enchanting one and one half story home with sweeping lawns, legacy oak trees, and vibrant and antique gardens. Resting on approximately five acres on historic Highland Road, Mount Hope Plantation is a dwelling that is strongly steeped in Louisiana’s flamboyant history.

Mount Hope Plantation is located in an area originally known as “the Dutch Highlands”. In the 1770’s, the Sharp family acquired a land grant of four hundred acres through Governor Unzaga, the Spanish governor of the time. The plantation later expanded to twelve hundred acres. Joseph Sharp is identified as the constructor of the first public cotton gin in Louisiana.

Mount Hope Plantation became a resting place for the Confederate soldiers during the war. Mount Hope survived the Civil War without any extensive damage. It has endured countless battles, and has managed to avoid extensive rebuilding, which often compromised the character of other antebellum homes that approach it in age. Brimming with history, Mount Hope Plantation charismatically stands as a beautiful legacy to the storied history of the South.

The picturesque property that Mount Hope rests on is captivating. The signature setting has added elegance with an inviting wrap around porch and a New Orleans style brick courtyard complimented by a beautiful pond and fountain. There are legacy oak trees estimated to be over 200 years old. There is an abundance of pecan and crepe myrtles, along with pear, cedar, and a cypress tree. The property has three other structures located on it.
